Why we invest in research and development
Cookware looks like a settled product category. Working in it every day, it is obvious how much is still unsolved.

From the outside, a patila is a patila. It is a shape that has existed for centuries and there is a reasonable assumption that there is nothing left to work out.
We have been manufacturing in Jagadhri since 1978, and our experience is the opposite. The more closely you look at how these vessels are actually used — eight hours a day, on fierce burners, by people whose livelihood depends on consistency — the more clearly you see the problems that have simply been tolerated because nobody addressed them.
Development work is how we address them, and we treat it as an ongoing cost of being in this business rather than a project with an end date.
What we are actually trying to improve
Our development work concentrates on four questions:
- Where does a vessel fail, and can that failure mode be designed out entirely?
- How evenly does heat reach the food, and what changes that?
- What is the right amount of metal for a given job — enough to perform, not so much that the vessel is unusable or wasteful?
- Does the vessel suit how the kitchen actually works — how it is lifted, cleaned, stored and carried?
Each has produced changes in the range. The jointless deep-drawn body came from the first. The copper-base line came from the second. Our gauge decisions come from the third. Products like cook & carry came from the fourth.
How the work is done
We are a manufacturer, not a laboratory, and our development reflects that. It is empirical and it happens on the shop floor and in customers' kitchens.
- We watch vessels in service. A halwai's kadai after two years tells you more about where metal is stressed than any specification sheet.
- We examine what comes back. Failures are the most useful information we receive. A cracked vessel shows exactly where the design was weakest.
- We make variants and compare them. Two gauges, two base constructions, two profiles — run side by side in a real kitchen doing real work.
- We listen to specific complaints. "The middle burns before the edges cook" is a design brief.
Why it costs money
Development is expensive in ways that are not obvious. Tooling for a deep-drawn body is a significant investment before a single sellable vessel exists. Variants that turn out worse than what we already make are written off. Trials tie up production capacity that could be making stock.
We accept that cost because the alternative is competing purely on price against vessels that are thinner than ours — a competition that ends with a worse product for the kitchen that buys it.
What it is not
We are not going to claim breakthroughs we have not made, or dress ordinary manufacturing up as science. Most of this work is incremental: a base ground flatter, a gauge held where a competitor would thin it, a weld dressed back so there is no crevice.
The accumulation of those decisions is the difference between a vessel that lasts three years and one that lasts fifteen.
